lenna

this is lenna, the face of compression algorithms in digital imaging.

i have been staring at her from my laptop for the past 2 hours in the chem library while comparing image compressions type JPEG, GIF, PNG and TIFF. the last 3 lectures before break were also spent staring at her. that totals to alot of hours. gladly, she is pretty and not an eyesore, if not i might have gone mad by now.

part of the history of the photo was that it was a nude spread in playboy that a computer technician happened to walk into the lab with one day while they were looking for something interesting to experiment on. successful compression of her photo, with the pornographic parts cropped out, resulted in widespread fame and playboy threatening to sue.

interesting=)

today

was an extremely memorable day.

because i received an email and postcard from singapore, from friends who're very dear to me, and whom i miss terribly.

morning, i read the email before going to school. and i teared.
evening, i came back from school to find the postcard. and i teared again.

it's nice to be remembered.

sample questions from the optics test

i'm serious.

what is fermat's principle?
one of the options was "what goes around comes around"

snell's law states that
"anything that can go wrong will go wrong"

these were real options. andrew has such a sick sense of humour it's so funny. including the prism lecture where we learnt how prisms help people who wanna lie in bed to watch tv see images upright so that "heads will be where they should be. unless of course you're watching certain types of shows"
